During the colonial period of Brazilian history, explorers called “bandeirantes” ventured into the countryside in search of gold and riches. In the 18th century, the height of mining expansion, the bandeirantes reached a mountain range abundant with rock crystals – the Serra dos Cristais.

In 1880, the Frenchmen initiated mining in the region. News spread and miners from all parts of Brazil flocked to Serra dos Cristais, transporting ore via horseback to the city of Paracatu and the port of Rio de Janeiro, where it was exported to Europe and distributed in major cutting and industrial centers.

On July 16, 1917, the city of São Sebastião dos Cristais was officially installed, with a large number of people coming from the city of Paracatu. Its name was changed in 1918 to Cristalina – “Crystalline”.

In addition to the charm of its crystals, Cristalina boasts attractions such as ecological tourism. Many believers of mysticism visit the city considering it to be the world's equilibrium point due to the magnetism of its soil.

Pedra do Chapéu, or "Hat Rock" (due to its shape), is an iconic geological formation in Cristalina. The rock is a block of quartz that weighs over 340 tons and is balanced on a point less than a square meter wide.
